Are You Just Looking for the Radical RideShare App?

Looking for a ride to Freezer Burn? Got some space to offer and make a new friend? Got some cargo that needs to go to the Fraya separately?

You should use the Radical Rideshare App.

Why Rideshares matter

  • Ride-sharing offers a multitude of benefits, including cost savings on transportation, reduced traffic congestion, and a positive impact on the environment. By encouraging carpooling and shared rides, ride-sharing will contribute to the overall sustainability of transportation at Freezer Burn.

How the app works

  • Check the map to see if there’s someone nearby or on the way to Freezer Burn that might be offering a ride. Similarly, you can see if anyone needs a ride on your route to Freezer Burn.
  • To offer a ride, simply click on the “Add a Trip” button and fill out the details. You may need to quickly verify your email address.

  • To ensure a positive ride-sharing experience, both passengers and drivers should prioritize clear communication, respect each other's time and personal space. Additionally, being friendly and considerate goes a long way in creating a pleasant ride for everyone involved.

What is “Greener Burn”?

Greener Burn is a collective of Alberta burners dedicated to reducing pollution and waste at Freezer Burn. Our efforts cover all aspects of the event—from operations and

camp construction to energy use and waste management. By making Freezer Burn more sustainable, we not only shrink our environmental footprint but also help keep the event financially accessible for everyone.

Our approach includes:

  • Acting now, not waiting for perfect solutions (“Immediacy”)
  • Educating the community on sustainability
  • Reducing, reusing, composting, and minimizing waste from the start
  • Working toward carbon neutrality by using and sharing renewable energy
  • Supporting community-led sustainability projects
  • Monitoring and offsetting carbon emissions to reach our goal of a carbon-neutral (and eventually carbon-negative) event
  • Achieving real change requires participation, communal effort, and radical inclusion. Greener Burn empowers individuals to practice Radical Self-Reliance and drive the cultural shift needed for a more sustainable future at Freezer Burn.

How Greener Burn Works

Greener Burn is an open-source initiative, meaning that the action comes from YOU, because lasting social movements start with the passion of their community members. The Greener Burn initiative provides the group support you'll need, so you don't need any special education or experience! Your ideas can take many different forms, including but not limited to:

Being a Camp Change-Maker!

  • Managing your own or your camp's waste more ecologically, such as through compost collection (Expand the Leave No Trace principle!)
  • Transitioning your camp's electrical and heating systems to 100% solar power (with an optional fossil fuel backup generator, if needed)

Become an Eco-Artist!

  • Make art that reuses or up-cycles existing materials or uses renewable energy
  • Brag about the reduced carbon-footprint of your work
  • Inspire others to take action!
  • Make your mutant vehicle into an EMV (Electric Mutant Vehicle!)

The potential ideas are endless - join Greener Burn to get inspired or talk through something you’re thinking about

Other ways to “Green” your Burn

Precycle

Do more with Less! Precycling entails everything you can do to reduce waste, conserve energy, reuse existing materials and still be fraya fabulous. Wherever possible, using non-toxic, biodegradable, renewable and salvaged materials, and those that can be repurposed at home or reused at next year’s event.

Structures

Select construction materials and decorations that are reusable. If you can’t reuse them, make sure they’re recyclable. Where possible, use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- certified and reclaimed wood and metal. Use screws instead of nails (they’re easier to remove). Design camp structures for easy construction/deconstruction, reuse, storage and salvage.

Food and water

Minimize kitchen waste and clean-up by planning simple meals, preparing food in advance, and freezing it. Remove unnecessary packaging at home and store food in reusable containers. Consider bringing a camping water tank to distribute water for your camp members and avoid single-use water bottles and jugs. Bring grey water home and use it to water lawns and garden plants.

Clothes and costumes

The thrift shop is your friend. When considering options, be mindful of MOOP. Things that can be particularly problematic include feathers, glitter (not welcome at Freezer Burn), sequins, beads, body gems, glued-on stuff, fake eyelashes, etc. Getting there and back.

Carpooling / ride-sharing

Definitely encouraged. To help you connect with participants offering rides or looking for one, you can use the Freezer Burn Radical Rideshare App. We also recommend attending pre-Freezer Burn events to make friends and coordinate rides early. Please ensure that you have clear plans for how to exit the event on time with all of your gear if you choose to ride-share.

How else can I get involved?

You can help by volunteering some time with our team at Freezer Burn. Check out our other Teams or the Centre Camp volunteer board.

We’re also looking for year-round help to improve existing projects and develop new ones! To learn more about the other projects we’re working on, meet up with us at one of our drink nights or any other information about our year-round initiative, please visit Greener Burn.
